Python statistics.variance() Method
Python statistics.variance()Used to calculate the sample variance of a given data set.
Syntax
The syntax of the statistics.variance() method is as follows:
statistics.variance(data, xbar=None)
Parameter Description:
- data-- An iterable object containing numeric values, such as a list or tuple.
- xbar-- An optional parameter representing the mean of the data set. If not provided, the function will calculate the mean of the data set internally.
Return Value
The function calculates and returns the sample variance of the given data set as the result.
Example
The following example demonstrates the usage of the variance() function:
Example
data = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
variance = statistics.variance(data)
print(variance)
Output result:
2.5
In the above example, the given data set is [1, 2, 3, 4, 5], and the sample variance calculated using the variance() method is 2.5.
Sample variance is a statistic that measures the dispersion of a data set. It represents the average of the squared deviations of data values from the mean. It describes the degree of variability in the data.
Unlike the pvariance() method, the variance() method calculates the sample variance rather than the population variance, so it uses an unbiased estimator. If you have data for an entire population, you can usepvariance()method to calculate the population variance.
