The name attribute specifies the name of the metadata. specifies the name for the metadata.

The name attribute specifiescontentthe name of the attribute's information/value.

Note:If the http-equiv attribute is set, the name attribute should not be set.

Attribute Values

Value Description
application-name Specifies the name of the Web application that the page represents.
author Specifies the name of the author of the document.

Example: <meta name="author" content="Hege Refsnes">
description Specifies the description of the page. Search engines will display this description in search results.

Example: <meta name="description" content="Free web tutorials">
generator Specifies a software package used to generate the document (not for hand-written pages).

Example: <meta name="generator" content="FrontPage 4.0">
keywords Specifies a comma-separated list of keywords - relevant to the webpage (tells search engines what the page is related to).

Tip:Always specify keywords (it is necessary for search engines to classify the page).

Example: <meta name="keywords" content="HTML, meta tag, tag reference">
