HTML <rp>Tag

Browser Support

IE 9+, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Safari support the <rp> tag.

Note:IE 8 or earlier versions of IE do not support the <rp> tag.

Definition and Usage

The <rp> tag is used in ruby annotations to define what is displayed by browsers that do not support the ruby element.

Ruby annotations are Chinese phonetic symbols or characters. Used in East Asia, they display the pronunciation of East Asian characters.

Use the <rp> tag with<ruby>and<rt>the <rt> tag together:
The <ruby> element consists of one or more characters that need explanation/pronunciation and an <rt> element that provides that information, and also includes an optional <rp> element that defines what to display when the browser does not support the "ruby" element.

Differences between HTML 4.01 and HTML5

The <rp> tag is a new tag in HTML5.
