Browser Support
Internet Explorer 10, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Safari browsers support the spellcheck attribute.
Note:Internet Explorer 9 and earlier IE versions do not support the spellcheck attribute.
Definition and Usage
The spellcheck attribute specifies whether spellchecking should be performed on the content of an element.
The following text can be spellchecked:
- Values in input elements of type text (not passwords)
- Values in textarea elements
- Values in editable elements
Differences Between HTML 4.01 and HTML5
The spellcheck attribute is new in HTML5.

Attribute Values
| Value | Description |
|---|---|
| true | Specifies that spellchecking should be performed on the element's text. |
| false | Specifies that spellchecking should not be performed on the element's text. |
