Internet Explorer 10, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome support the muted attribute.
Note:Internet Explorer 9 and earlier versions do not support the muted attribute.
Definition and Usage
The muted attribute is a boolean attribute.
If set, it specifies that the audio output should be muted.

The <audio> attribute is new in HTML 5.
Differences between HTML and XHTML
In XHTML, attribute minimization is not allowed, and the muted attribute must be defined as <audio muted="muted">.
