Use Your Windows PC as a Web Server

  • If you have installed IIS or PWS, you can configure your PC as a web server.
  • IIS or PWS can turn your computer into a web server.
  • Microsoft's IIS and PWS are free web server components.

IIS - Internet Information Server (Internet Information Services)

IIS is a collection of Internet-based services developed by Microsoft for use on Microsoft Windows platforms.

Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7 all include IIS. Windows NT also has IIS available.

IIS is easy to install and is an ideal tool for developing and testing web applications.

PWS - Personal Web Server

PWS is used for older Windows systems, such as Windows 95, 98, and NT.

PWS is easy to install and can be used to develop and test Web applications that include ASP.

We do not recommend using PWS except for training. It is outdated and has security issues.

Windows Web Server Versions

  • Windows 7 (all versions) comes with IIS 7.5
  • Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions come with IIS 7
  • Windows Vista Home Premium comes with IIS 7
  • Windows Vista Home Basic does not support PWS or IIS
  • Windows XP Professional comes with IIS 5.1
  • Windows XP Home Edition does not support IIS or PWS
  • Windows 2000 Professional comes with IIS 5.0
  • Windows NT Professional comes with IIS 3, and also supports IIS 4
  • Windows NT Workstation supports PWS and IIS 3
  • Windows ME does not support PWS or IIS
  • Windows 98 comes with PWS
  • Windows 95 supports PWS

How to Install IIS on Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Follow these steps to install IIS:

  1. Open Control Panel from the Start menu
  2. Double-click "Programs and Features"
  3. Click "Turn Windows features on or off"
  4. Select the check box for "Internet Information Services (IIS)", then click OK

After you have installed IIS, make sure to install all patches (run Windows Update).

How to Install IIS on Windows XP and Windows 2000

Follow these steps to install IIS:

  1. On the Start menu, click Settings and select Control Panel
  2. Double-click "Add/Remove Programs"
  3. Click "Add/Remove Windows Components"
  4. Click "Internet Information Services (IIS)"
  5. Click "Details"
  6. Select the "World Wide Web Service" check box, and click OK
  7. In Windows Components, click "Next" to install IIS

After you have finished installing IIS, be sure to install all patch packages (run Windows Update).

Test Your Installation

After you have installed IIS or PWS, follow the steps below to test whether the installation was successful:

  1. On your hard drive, search for theInetpubfolder
  2. Open the Inetpub folder, find thewwwrootfolder
  3. Under wwwroot, create a new folder, for example "MyWeb"
  4. Use a text editor to write a few lines of ASP code, name the file "test1.asp" and save it in the "MyWeb" folder
  5. Make sure your Web server is running; use the following method to confirm its running status: go to Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, then double-click the "IIS Manager" icon.
  6. Open your browser, type "http://localhost/MyWeb/test1.asp" in the address bar, and you will see your first ASP page.

Notes:Look for the IIS (or PWS) icon in your Start menu or taskbar. The program provides features for starting and stopping the Web server, enabling and disabling ASP, and more.

How to Install PWS on Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT

Windows 98: On your Windows CD, open theAdd-onsfolder, find thePWSfolder, and run thesetup.exefile in it to install PWS.

Windows 95 or Windows NT: Download the "Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack" from Microsoft's site to install PWS.

Test your installation as described above.

How to Install IIS on Windows Server 2003

  1. After you start Windows Server 2003, you will see theServer Management Wizard
  2. If the wizard does not appear, openAdministrative Tools, and then selectConfigure Your Server Wizard
  3. In the wizard, clickAdd or Remove a Role, click Next
  4. SelectCustom configuration, click Next
  5. SelectApplication Server role, click Next
  6. SelectEnable ASP.NET, click Next
  7. Now, the wizard will ask forServer 2003 CD. Insert the CD and continue running the wizard until it is complete, then click the Finish button
  8. The wizard should now show "Application Server role is installed"
  9. ClickManage this application serverOpenApplication Server management console (MMC)
  10. ExpandInternet Information Services (IIS) Manager, then expand your server, and then the Sites folder
  11. You will see the default website, and its status should be Running
  12. IIS is running!
  13. InIn Internet Information Services (IIS) ManagerclickWeb Service Extensionsfolder
  14. Here, you will see thatActive Server Pages is prohibited(This is the default configuration of IIS 6)
  15. Select itActive Server Pages, and clickAllowbutton
  16. So ASP is activated!
