The hasChildNodes() method returns TRUE if the current element node has child nodes, otherwise it returns FALSE.

elementNode.hasChildNodes()

The following code snippet usesloadXMLDoc()put "books.xmlLoad into xmlDoc and check whether the first <book> element has child nodes:
